Star Trek Around Comic-Con – Part Three – Panels & Events

In both parts one and two, we covered where to grab awesome SDCC swag and what official CBS panels and events are taking place in or around Comic-Con this year.

So in this part, we are going to be covering what other official and non-official “Star Trek” themed panels, book signings and some other non-Trek events are being held this year that might be of interest to Trek fans.

“JEAN-LUC PICARD: THE FIRST DUTY” EXHIBIT

In celebration of Patrick Stewart’s return to his iconic “Star Trek: The Next Generation” role, “Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty” is a special exhibition showcasing original props, costumes and other artefacts tracing Picard’s life and Starfleet career. Items on display include his cherished Ressikan flute, the legendary Picard family album, his Starfleet uniforms, models of ships Picard captained, and all that remains of the “Borg Queen.” The gallery also features exclusive first looks at costumes and other items featured in the upcoming CBS All Access series STAR TREK: PICARD. Visitors will have the first chance to purchase exclusive STAR TREK: PICARD merchandise and opportunities for exclusive giveaways. The gallery is located at Michael J Wolf Fine Arts, 363 Fifth Ave., San Diego, Calif. 92101 and will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday of Comic-Con from 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM and on Sunday from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM.

“STAR TREK” UNIVERSE EXCLUSIVE PINS

A number of exclusive, limited-quantity “Star Trek” pins will be available to fans during Comic-Con. All week long, a Starfleet Headquarters visitors badge will be available for those who visit and complete the “Star Trek” transporter experience on the show floor. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday, a limited quantity of pins featuring the debut of two characters from the upcoming CBS All Access animated show STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS will also be available from the “Star Trek” booth. At the “Jean-Luc Picard: The First Duty” museum experience at Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts, fans can get an exclusive replica pin of the Picard family crest as seen in STAR TREK: PICARD.

CBS All Access is bringing the “Star Trek” universe to the San Diego Comic-Con Exhibit Hall, Thursday, July 18 through Sunday, July 21, where fans are invited to step aboard the U.S.S. Discovery and travel to strange and distant lands through an immersive transporter experience. Fans will also have the opportunity to meet some of their favourite “Star Trek” talents in person with meet-and-greets in the booth (Booth #4237) on Saturday, July 20. Comic-Con badges are required for entry.

With LGBTQ or LGBTQ-friendly creators as writers, artists, directors, producers, actors, entertainers, and journalists, what do their characters and creations mean for diverse representation, characters, and storylines on comics, film, and television? Just three weeks after the 50th anniversary of the of the Stonewall Riots-which changed the battle for gay rights forever-this diverse all-star panel will celebrate and spotlight creators, comics, and fans as they discuss the past, present, and future Out in Comics. Founding moderator and bestselling author Andy Mangels (Wonder Woman ’77 Meets The Bionic Woman, Star Trek and Star Wars books and comics) again chairs the panel and welcomes panelists.

The panel will also include footage from WB’s Batwoman, No Straight Lines, and Surge of Dawn, plus an all-ages trailer for the 2019 film festival Dirty Sexy Comics, a documentary by Robert Chandler. The panel will be followed by a brief Prism Comics Fan Mixer, allowing LGBTQ fans and allies to meet and mingle!

Moderated by Stuart Volkow, project manager for the Ax Center for Experimental Cosmology (ACEC) at UCSD. Suzy Kim (Brown University) adapts comics theory to explore London’s architecture and the form of the panels that depict it in From Hell, arguing that the visibilities of the body in urban architecture guide readerly attention to the possibilities for movement in urban space on the page. Phillip Vaughan (University of Dundee) traces the history of fumetti (photocomics) in the UK and U.S. in the 1970s and 1980s and their recent comeback in Star Trek: New Visions and software like Comic Life. Through the lenses of comics theory and ludology, Christopher Murray (University of Dundee) considers how webcomics incorporate elements of play with enhanced reader choice to draw out the tension between concepts of games as a kind of experience or as a mode of storytelling.
12:00 – 1:00pm29ABStar Trek Eyewitness – An hour with 1964 Pilot Director Robert Butler: With Captain Pike, Number One, and Vina back in the spotlight, “Dr. Trek” Larry Nemecek presents a rare public Trekland Live with Emmy Award–winning director Robert Butler, the last of the key creatives from 1964’s original Star Trek pilot “The Cage.” Hear firsthand about that seminal moment in Star Trek and the choices made in pop culture history 55 years later-and his thoughts on its 2019 reincarnation.
12:30 – 1:30pm 2LGBTQ, Mental Health, and Comics – Moderated by Lorran Garrison, the panel will talk about how comics, cosplay, video gaming, and other forms of pop culture foster mental health wellness of teens and young adults. More specifically, the panel will dive deep into the impact of comics and pop culture within the LGBTQIA community. Bullying and suicide ideation are two of the many issues the LGBTQIA community combats, and panelists will give advice and resources about coping with unsupportive families, finding/creating community, and ways family members can show up for their queer loved one. Lorran Garrison is a school psychologist student (San Diego, CA) with an early childhood development background. She has also been trained in parent education with Resources for Infant Educarers. Other panelists: Anthony E. Zuiker is the creator of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and co-founder and publisher of Zuiker Press. Tara Madison Avery is a publisher, cartoonist, and illustrator of Stacked Deck Press, specializing in LGBTQAIU interests. Dr. Janina Scarlet is a licensed clinical psychologist and founder/developer of Superhero Therapy, recipient of Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award from the United Nations. Justine Mastin is a licensed marriage and family therapist and founder of Blue Box Counseling, which specializes in LGBTQIA interests and co-host of Starship Therapise podcast. Lara Taylor Kester is a licensed marriage and family therapist, co-creator of the Geek Therapy Library, and podcast co-host for Geek Therapy Radio.
