Discovery S3 Yeah Baby!, Great News Yeah? Well Not For Some.

So it is official, Discovery has received its Season 3 renewal.

Today CBS officially announced it was to renew Discovery for season 3 and that along with Alex Kurtzman, Michelle Paradise would be joining him as the shows new co-runner.

Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President, Original Content, CBS All Access said this in today’s release:

“The massive success of Star Trek: Discovery’s second season launch exceeded our expectations in both driving subscriber growth and generating a phenomenal response from ‘Star Trek’ fans. With Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise at the helm, we look forward to continuing Star Trek: Discovery’s  journey, growing the ‘Star Trek’ franchise on CBS All Access and bringing fans new ‘Star Trek’ stories for many years to come”

Alex Kurtzman added:

“Michelle joined us midway through season two and energized the room with her ferocious knowledge of Trek,” Kurtzman said. “Her grasp of character and story detail, her drive and her focus have already become essential in ensuring the Trek legacy, and her fresh perspective always keeps us looking forward. I’m proud to say Michelle and I are officially running Star Trek: Discovery together.”

For those who are not familiar with Michelle’s body of work, she has worked on a number of great shows, for example, she was a co-executive producer on the CW series The Originals, has written for shows such as Hart of Dixie, Exes & Ohs and more recently, Michelle has written three episodes of Discovery season 2.

In addition to his role as showrunner of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, Kurtzman will continue to oversee the expansion of the growing “Star Trek” universe for CBS Studios, which along with Discovery includes thus far,

  • The Section 31 Show starring Michelle Yeoh
  • The Lower Decks
  • The still-untitled Picard Show starring Sir Patrick Stewart
  • And the untitled kids animated Star Trek show rumoured to be heading to Nickelodeon

July Shoot?

More news coming from today’s renewal is the “Rumour” that’s season 3 will start shooting in July of this year, this information was hinted at in a tweet posted today by Production Weekly (@prodweek

However, no further information on this has been released at this time.

Great News, But NOT For Some!

This is great news yeah, well for most of the fan base it has been a great day indeed.

However, there has been somewhat of a meltdown going on in a certain subset of fans, who were hoping for a cancellation, not a renewal.

With comments ranging from “This is a ? you to the fans.”  to  “Star Trek is Dead“,  and then we have those YouTubers who have already begun to spin this renewal as some sort of conspiracy theory, saying that it was only renewed with a reduced budget and episode count. (Some people have to ruin it)

Nevertheless, as we do not buy into these theories we leave you with this truly amazing video by one of our favourite Star Trek YouTubers, it is hilarious and sums up all these Trek-based conspiracy theories very succinctly.

Nb: we warn you there are some adult themes in the video, discretion is advised.

Star Trek Discovery Season 2 airs on CBS All Access (USA), Space (Canada) Thurdays And Fridays on Netflix (Rest of the World)
