Picard Series to Stream Internationally on Amazon Prime

It might still be untitled, but it has found its international home, the new CBS All Access Star Trek “Picard series” landed a new home today, in somewhat of a controversial move, CBS Studios International announced that it had come to an agreement with Amazon Prime Video for the streaming rights to the new “Picard” series.

Unlike Star Trek: Discovery which airs on Netflix, this move from CBS is unexpected as many assumed that the Picard series would air on the same platform internationally as Discovery.

This exclusive agreement is a multi-year deal that will see the new show stream in over 200 countries and territories, outside of the U.S. and Canada, much like Discovery is now, each episode will be available on Amazon Prime Video within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere on CBS All Access.

Although the deal outlines the international distribution for the new show, it does not mention where Canadian fans will be able to see it, unfortunately, at present, there has been no official announcement as to where Picard will settle in Canada.

Watch Sir Patrick Stewart announce this news himself:

In the announcement statement released today on StarTrek.com, Brad Beale, Vice President, Worldwide Content Licensing for Amazon Prime Video said:

“We’re thrilled to partner with CBS to bring the newest edition of the storied Star Trek franchise to our international Amazon Prime Video customers,”

“With the incredible Sir Patrick Stewart returning as the beloved Jean-Luc Picard, we’re excited we can give Trek fans both old and new the opportunity to see him back in action. It’s a terrific addition to our already robust catalog of exclusive Amazon Prime Video content.”

Armando Nuñez, President and Chief Executive Officer, CBS Global Distribution Group followed on with:

“For 50 years, the Star Trek series have been a global sensation, spanning generations and audiences of all ages. It’s an honor to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back for what is sure to be another world-class extension of the historic franchise,”

“We look forward to working with the team at Amazon Prime Video to bring this next chapter of the incredible Star Trek franchise to its passionate international fan base.

Series executive producer Alex Kurtzman added:

“There’s only one word that can begin to describe Sir Patrick Stewart as Starship Commander Jean-Luc Picard, and that’s ‘legendary,’”

“We are thrilled beyond measure to have him back in command, bringing the optimistic messages of Star Trek to audiences around the world.”

A Psychological Show

Recently in an interview with the LA Times, Star Trek series head honcho described the mandate for the new Picard series as:

“The mandate was to make it a more psychological show, a character study about this man in his emeritus years,” he says. “There are so few shows that allow a significantly older protagonist to be the driver.”

Not that it would be “Matlock in Space.” “What happens when circumstances have conspired to not give him the happiest of endings? Hopefully, it’s a reinforcement of [‘Trek’ creator Gene] Roddenberry’s vision of optimism. He’s going to have to go through deep valleys to get back to the light.”

“It’ll be very different than ‘Discovery.’ It’ll be slower, more meditative. It speaks to the rainbow of colors we’re playing with in all these different shows. ”
