“It’s Love, Jim”

“Choose your Pain” was an episode full of firsts, this episode not only introduced us to the use of the first F-Word in the history of Trek, a potential Klingon spy in the form of Lt. Tyler, and Discovery’s take on the iconic character Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson), but it also introduced us to Star Trek’s first gay couple.

Back when the series was announced, we were also told that this series would feature Star Trek’s first openly gay Starfleet Officer Lt. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), but the writers did not stop there. Not only would we be getting our first openly gay Starfleet officer, but they were to include Star Trek’s first openly gay couple: Anthony Rapp’s character would be in a relationship with his co-star Wilson Cruz, who plays his onscreen partner Dr. Hugh Culber.

As you can imagine to some this news caused a lot of contention among the fans of the show, some for and some against, nevertheless in last night’s episode, true to their word we were finally introduced to these two as a couple.

*** Spoilers Ahead ***

After taking the place of “Ripper” the Tardigrade that Discovery had been using to augment the Spore Drive, Lt. Stamets emerged more or less unharmed. At the end of the episode, our couple are introduced in a scene with Dr Culber (Cruz) scanning his partner Stamets (Rapp) to make sure he is ok.

Stamets – “Stop”

Dr. Culber – “Stop What”

Stamets – “Stop Worrying”, “Stop Doctoring”

Dr. Culber – “Well, one tends to worry when they’re doomed to love a brilliant but reckless maniac who’s willing to risk his life for glory,”

Stamets – “The Captain was in danger”

Dr. Culber – “Captains are in Danger every day”

Stamets – “You were in danger”

Culber told Stamets in the closing scene, “Don’t do anything that stupid ever again, You may not care about you, but I do.”

The best part of this scene, apart from the fact it felt natural and in no way forced, it showed us that love has no boundaries in the 23rd century.

Extra Spoiler – I wonder what this image might mean???
