The Measure Of An Episode – DS9 “Rapture”

We commence with Jonathan’s story about how hot things if touched with skin, can be dangerous. This might explain his predilection for eating only ice cream.

Then the discussion finally tilts to a scatterbrained version of the opening of the episode. But we manage to get through it and segue into what Dax’s role on the ship might be. Spoilers, we never get there.

(CBS) Sisko Solves The Puzzle

Since this is the first Deep Space 9 episode to air after the release of Star Trek: First Contact, we get into a missed opportunity of First Contact conspiracies that very likely would have cropped up after the Enterprise left the past. After the Enterprise returned, the crew could have cleared up many of the First Contact conspiracy theories about a bald man visiting Earth facilitating First Contact with the Vulcans. Since he’s in the present, there would have been no reason to perpetuate the mythology. But they didn’t do that.

Is the Bajoran race-wide religion actually a government? They have physical proof of their prophets, which implies faith isn’t required, the only allegiance. But Jonathan clears the air that the prophets aren’t so forthcoming with commandments or information, so it’s much closer to a religion than we first thought.

Also, did the writers of this episode rip off “Close Encounters of the Third Kind?”… Probably…
