Welcome to another episode on RetroTrek. A series where I take a look at some classic or retro games give you a little introduction, then some gameplay in form of live streams and then we conclude the whole game with a review. This month or more our Retro-game will be the Star Trek 25th Anniversary game.
Published in 1992 by Interplay Entertainment, Star Trek 25h Anniversary is an adventure/action game in which the player assumes the role of a TOS landing party with Kirk, Spock and McCoy on different missions. In order to commence any action, a player must select a body part, for example, the eye for examining, the mouth for speaking and so on. In order to beat the game, it is necessary to solve different puzzles and perform special actions in each mission.
The game represents a TOS classic adventure with a few Starship battles and dealings with Harry Mudd. Like TOS the missions are kind of episodic with knowledge from previous missions not required to solve the next. There is a total of seven episodes and each begins with a briefing about the mission either by a Captains log or a message from Starfleet Command.
Each mission has optional things and alternate solutions that lead to a different plot path. As soon as a mission is completed starfleet gives the player an evaluation of performance. Even if you fail a mission you might pass to the next one and the game only ends if the Enterprise is destroyed. The death of a redshirt only results in a worse score at the end.
Not only does this game operate on Windows but as well as mac. I also found a DOS version of it. However in this case it is easy to get the game. It is sold on steam for 9 euros and can be installed like any other game.
I’m personally looking forward to this Trek adventure. Especially due to its teased story and its TOS nature. Lets see how a game like this looks and works. As usual you will be able to interact with me live and maybe even give some tips. The stream will be on friday 9:30 pm central european time.
