RJC – Star Trek Retrospective – Star Trek: Nemesis

As the 90s came to an end, the Star Trek franchise was suffering some fatigue. Star Trek Insurrection was seen as a disappointing follow up to First Contact and by the early 2000s, both Deep Space Nine and Voyager had ended.

For the next big-screen adventure featuring The Next Generation crew, something radical was needed to shake up the formula in Star Trek Nemesis.

Synopsis

The Enterprise is diverted to Romulus where Shinzon, who lives on the slave planet Remus, wants peace with the Federation. They soon discover that Shinzon has some very sinister ulterior motives.

Although Nemesis is widely regarded as the TNG crews worst outing, with an inexperienced director with NO Star Trek experience, and a plot very similar to The Wrath of Khan with Picard (Patrick Stweart) facing off against his nemesis AKA Shinzon (Tom Hardy) the entire film had a lot of issues.

Some of the drama behind the scenes will make any fan wonder how the film got made in the first place, below are some examples…

Director Had No Star Trek Experience

Paramount wanted “fresh blood” to direct the movie, hoping that by doing so, Nemesis would have better reception than Insurrection. With that, Paramount asked Stuart Baird, who had directed U.S Marshalls and Executive Decision having someone with experience would be great no?

Well no, Baird had never seen one episode involving The Next Generation cast or watched one after he took the job and because of this both Marina Sirtis and LeVar Burton were very disapproving of Baird’s refusal to watch any episodes, which they cite as the cause of the failure of the movie to engage with the fans.

Jonathan Frakes Was Left Out Of The Creative Process

With not only numerous episodes and TWO Star Trek feature films under his belt, but you would also have thought with Paramount wanting a hit with Nemesis, the creatives would have involved Frakes in some capacity.

Unfortunately no, Frakes was left out cold and was not involved in any creative decisions. Frakes’s job was just to play William Riker and that’s it.

In fact, after Insurrection Frakes would not direct an episode of Star Trek until Star Trek: Discovery.
