The Measure Of An Episode – Operation, Annihilate!

In this episode, we start with comments about the ostensibly futuristic architecture of the alien planet which is undeniably a 60s Los Angeles where one of the producer’s moms let the production film at her work.

The outdoor scenes were shot at TRW Space and Defense Park which is now part of Northrop Grumman (Aerospace Systems), which was located at One Space Park Drive in Redondo Beach, California.

This location was also considered for the Voyager episode “Futures End”, however, unfortunately, no suitable place was found where the crew was allowed to shoot.

Operation – Annihilate! Also gives us a glimpse into the life of Kirk, as we meet his brother George Samuel Kirk, which could be mistaken for evil Kirk’s twin shows up, at least he reads as evil since he’s played by a moustachioed Shatner (Mirror Universe). Much of the Kirk family line comes into the discussion until they all… die. Oh. Spoilers.

The idea of external versus internal science fiction comes into play. This episode seems to rest heavily on the psychological consequences of science fiction without exploring the actual science fiction. A purer example of science fiction might be the Alien franchise.

Reasonable heaps of praise to Nimoy for how well he plays a tortured Vulcan. He seems to transcend any awkward or over-the-top portrayals of aliens and plays the stoicism just right. His typical stance when reading his bridge instrumentation is bizarre.

Why is he always standing instead of sitting? Even more so, why does the entire Star Trek canon forget about Vulcans’ second eyelids? Could it be they just forgot? Do you know who didn’t forget? Tim Russ. That’s right. Tuvok never gets a chance to explore the rather pointless feature of a Vulcan.

As part of our podcast, we have a unique way of choosing episodes to discuss so we once again, kickstart the old ’random episode generator and Paul is particularly disappointed, if not disgusted with what is chosen. Maybe it’s your favourite episode. Maybe not. Paul doesn’t care. It’s already his least favourite…
