The Measure of an Episode – Voyager “Parallax”

Naturally, we begin the episode with a little chat about the little-known sequel/prequel to Good Will Hunting called Not Will Hunting. It’s an emotional tale about Good Will’s son unable to live up to the academic and intellectual capacities of his/her dad.

We hypothesize the biggest difference between this sequel/prequel and the reboot/continuation of Frasier will be that Kelsey Grammer will be heavily featured and Matt Damon will most certainly not be in Not Will Hunting. It’s unclear why we spent so much time on this subject. Maybe we were hungry or something.

It’s happening suspiciously often where our Random Episode Generator chooses episodes that are concretely linked in some way to a previous episode viewed recently. Listens might conclude we’ve somehow artificially stacked the episode list, making their selection seem random. But no, there’s actual magic happening here.

For perhaps too long, we carry on about how the blurb for this episode doesn’t live up to the normal high blurb standards for Voyager. In fact, the quality lists dramatically toward a Deep Space 9 blurb. It’s possible the Voyager blurb writer had to go to a wedding and had the Deep Space 9 writer cover. Just spit-balling here. It’s anybody’s guess until we complete our bigger internet research project of determining who writes this stuff and then bringing them on the podcast.

Voyager “Parallax” Synopsis:

Voyager has set a course for home, repairs are underway, and it’s time to pick personnel to fill vital crew positions.

The EMH (Emergency Medical Hologram, but you should know that already) takes the main stage discussion. The concept of the EMH implies its function is more that of a paramedic rather than a full-fledged doctor. Even its name indicates it should carry an emergency role, so the bedside manner and personality wouldn’t be necessary or relevant. The discrepancy irks us. When your aorta is bleeding out, checking in on how the kids are doing isn’t a priority.

A nice tweak to the episode could be to have Captain Janeway and B’Elanna unwittingly board the incorrect ship earlier in the episode, setting the plot on a course to more interesting science fiction procedurals. Jonathan makes the comment it bears some resemblance to the two Picards episode of The Next Generation.

Neither of us is able to remember the name of the episode, but you should know what I mean if you’re audacious enough to call yourself a Trek fan.
