Truth OR Myth? – Beta Canon – Voyager’s Return Home

Hello and welcome to another episode of Truth OR Myth,  a Star Trek web series that normally looks at the Truth, or canon, information to dispel the myths that have surfaced on a given topic.

The U.S.S. Voyager’s seven years in the Delta Quadrant was a well documented and polarizing topic for the citizens of the Federation.  But what happened to Voyager and it’s crew AFTER the starship returned to Earth?  Well today, we’ll find out…

Once again today’s video will be a bit different as we’re taking a look at what happened to the U.S.S. Voyager and it’s crew members after they returned to Earth.

There isn’t a lot of canon information on this topic, so what I’ve done is thoroughly researched this through Beta Canon and filled in some of the gaps with my imagination, all to give you good “Tri-naries” a little bit to chew. It should be noted that this is not a definitive Beta Canon List of events.  You see the problem with Beta canon is that it often conflicts directly with canon or with other Beta Canon works, and this is the case with Voyager’s Return.  And as Star Trek: Picard continues, I’m sure we’ll get more official information on this topic, but for now it’s all up in the air.

As a result, though, most information in this video should pretty much be taken with a grain of stardust, and only considered a little bit of Star Trek Fun!   And so, with all that out of the way, let’s begin.

(CBS) U.S.S. Voyager
01 – U.S.S. Voyager

When the U.S.S. Voyager returned to the Alpha Quadrant unexpectedly at the end of 2377, Starfleet immediately began debriefing its crew, and analyzing all the upgrades and changes, along with the new technologies, that the starship was sporting. According to the Captain of the Starship, Voyager’s unexpected return to Earth was aided by an Admiral Kathryn Janeway from a future timeline that no longer existed.

In that timeline, Voyager had returned 23 years after being stranded in the Delta Quadrant, but Admiral Janeway had felt that an earlier return of Voyager would prevent many deaths and illnesses within the Voyager family and had set out on a personal mission to use a Borg Transwarp Hub to get Voyager home, and change that timeline, and she was successful.

Also in that alternate timeline, upon its return, Voyager herself would be studied and then put in to the fleet museum for the Federations Public to visit the heroic starship who’s Delta Quadrant missions had left them polarized.

Starfleet only pondered this future for the starship for a short time.

The reality of the situation was that Voyager herself was in excellent shape, in fact, with the added technologies, it was in better shape than when she had left.  And Starfleet was still in the process of rebuilding the fleet following their war with the Dominion.

And so the decision was made to refit the U.S.S. Voyager and send her back out in to the unknown.

(CBS) Ensign Kim and Captain Kim
02 – Harry Kim

Harry Kim’s long tenure of being an ensign in rank was over.  Upon Voyager’s return, he was immediately promoted to the rank of Full Lieutenant, and assigned as Voyager’s new Tactical Officer and second in command.

Harry Kim rekindled his old romantic relationship with Libby Webber, but Harry was unaware that Libby was now working for Starfleet Intelligence as a deep cover agent, only to find out this fact during a mission where the newly promoted Admiral Janeway and Voyagers crew, broke the Doctor, Seven of Nine and Icheb out of a Starfleet Prison.

And by mid 2379, Harry and Libby had officially broken up, after she had refused his marriage proposal twice.

By the 25th Century, Harry Kim had been promoted to the Rank of Captain and been given command the U.S.S. Rhode Island, a refit Nova Class Starship.

(CBS) Seven Of Nine – Star Trek: Picard
03 – Seven of Nine

Seven of Nine, also known as Annika Hansen had a difficult transition to life in the Alpha Quadrant. Upon her return, the Doctor, Icheb and Seven herself were thrown in to holding cells after a strange Borg Assimilation virus began attacking the people of the Earth.

The newly-promoted Admiral Kathryn Janeway, rallying her old crew back together once again, were able to rescue the captured crew members as well as prove they were not to blame for the outbreak and come up with a cure for the virus.

After these events Seven temporarily accepted a job at Starfleet Academy as an instructor, but left after only short time, as her temperament was not suited to that career.

It was at this time, the Seven began a long period of Self Discovery.  Getting to know her Aunt Irene Hanson.

By 2386, Seven had joined the Fenris Rangers, an organization that had stepped up to the plate, trying to keep law and order in the areas formally known as the Romulan Neutral Zone.

During that time, she began a romantic relationship with Bjayzl and told her about her surrogate “son” Icheb. However, Bjayzl then had Icheb kidnapped so she could harvest the young Starfleet Lieutenant’s Borg Components to sell on the Black Market.

Seven was able to track down Icheb’s location, but was forced to euthanize Icheb due to the extensive damage done by Bjazels team.  Seven spent the next 13 years in the Fenris Rangers, tracking Bjayzl down, and once she found her, killed her, finally getting justice, in her eyes, for Icheb.

Currently, Seven of Nine has joined the crew of La Serena Along with Former Captain, now Admiral Jean-Luc Picard.

(CBS) Commander Barclay & Tom Paris – Star Trek: Voyager – Endgame
04 – Tom Paris

Upon Voyager’s return to the Alpha Quadrant, Tom was promoted two steps in rank to Lieutenant Commander, previously having been a Lieutenant, junior grade.

Tom then accompanied B’Elanna Torres, his wife, to the Klingon sanctuary of Boreth in order to help B’Elanna in a quest to find her mother, who had been lost in the wilds of Boreth’s jungles.

Soon after, he rejoined the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager, as the ships second officer, but when the assigned first officer to ship was quickly revealed to be a changeling infiltrator, Tom Paris was then given the position of First Officer.

After his service on the U.S.S. Voyager, Paris was promoted to Captain, and ultimately reached the rank of Admiral. However, shortly thereafter, Paris voluntarily took a demotion to Captain to once again serve in the field.

During this time, He and his wife B’Ellana would also have a second child which they named Michael Owen Paris.

(CBS) B’Elanna Torres – Star Trek: Voyager – Endgame
05 – B’Elanna Torres

Upon return to the Alpha Quadrant, Torres agreed to officially join Starfleet and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

With her husband in tow, she then went to the planet Boreth in an attempt to find her mother, Miral. Torres was eventually successful in finding her mother, and the 2 began the process of reconciliation, but Miral was mortally wounded by a wild animal.

After killing the animal, Miral then asked her daughter to perform the Hegh’bat. Knowing that the only other outcome was for her mother to suffer a slow, agonizing and dishonorable death, a heartbroken B’Elanna carried out her mother’s wishes.

After reuniting with her husband and daughter, the family moved to Boreth to pursue prophecies about their infant, Miral, who had been named after B’Elanna Mother.

Miral was eventually kidnapped by a Klingon religious group that considered her to be the eventual savior of the Klingon people and believed that only they could protect her until it was time to fulfill her destiny. B’Elanna convinced this group that she could protect her daughter, but Miral was still at risk from another Klingon group that wanted her dead. To escape them, Torres and Paris developed a plan where th B’Elanna and Miral would fake their deaths thus remaining under the Klingons radar.

Their current status and whereabouts are unknown.

(Paramount) The Doctor – EMH MkI
06 – The Doctor

Voyager’s EMH Mark 1, also known simply as the Doctor, also had a tough time adjusting to life in the Alpha Quadrant.

During the Assimilation Virus epidemic, Starfleet believed the Doctor to have assisted Seven of Nine and Icheb in releasing the virus on Earth, and as such imprisoned the Doctor intent on decompiling his program to discover the truth behind the incident.

After being broken out of prison by his former comrades on Voyager, the Doctor was able to cure the virus and prove his innocence, but Starfleet still saw the Doctor as a piece of their technology, rather the sentient being Janeway and her crew had come to know.

Eventually this situation would be resolved when a Federation Court of Law declared the Doctor himself a person, with all the rights and privileges afforded every other sentient lifeforms.

Though this ruling was groundbreaking, it did only apply to the Doctor, and so he began to champion the cause of holographic rights.

In 2382, Starfleet ordered The Doctor’s mobile emitter be transferred for research purposes to the Federations scientific facility on Galor IV. The Doctor then filed a lawsuit to prevent this from happening and the JAG office issued an injunction preventing the transfer until further research could be done and a final ruling made.  Unfortunately, no ruling on this topic has been made yet.

Currently the Doctor is still an active member of Starfleet, even being given a full commission with the starting rank of Lieutenant Commander.

(CBS) Lt Cmdr Tuvok – Star Trek: Voyager
07 – Tuvok

Upon his return to the Alpha Quadrant, Tuvok accepted a position as an instructor at Starfleet Academy and a promotion to the Rank of Commander.

In late 2379, Commander Tuvok was sent undercover to Romulus, to recall the legendary Ambassador Spock from his quest for re-unification back to the Federation to confer with the new Federation President.

As a result of this mission, Tuvok was on Romulus when the Reman renegade Shinzon mounted his coup d’état and assassinated the Praetor and the Romulan Imperial Senate.

In the chaos that followed, Tuvok was captured and imprisoned by one of the factions seeking control over the Empire. He was later rescued by Spock, and the two of them were retrieved from Romulus by U.S.S. Titan, under the command of Captain William T. Riker.

Captain Riker was impressed with Tuvok’s performance during the crisis, and offered him a permanent position onboard the Titan as tactical officer. Not willing to be separated from his wife for another extended period, Tuvok only agreed after Riker approved his request to have T’Pel reside aboard the starship as well.

Currently, Tuvok has risen to the rank of rear Admiral and is spearheading Starfleets efforts to explore the Delta Quadrant and make meaningful contact and alliances with the species he and the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager had once encountered there.

(CBS) Chakotay
08 – Chakotay

After returning to Earth, Commander Chakotay was promoted to the rank of Captain, and at Janeway’s request, given command of the U.S.S. Voyager.

In 2381, Chakotay requested an open-ended leave of absence from Starfleet, which was granted.

Chakotay was recalled to duty after nine weeks. But concerned about Chakotay’s command ability, Admirals Kenneth Montgomery ordered him to undergo a psychological evaluation.

The Psychological evaluation went well, and the Pysch Counselor assign to the evaluation recommended that Chakotay remain as captain of Voyager

This decision, however, was overturned by Montgomery, who had placed a new officer as Captain of Voyager in his place. Devastated by this decision, and increasingly concerned about the physical and mental health of Seven of Nine, Chakotay resigned from Starfleet.

The new Captain of Voyager, Afsarah Eden, would eventually be promoted and put in charge of Operation Full Circle, Starfleet’s plan to explore the Delta Quadrant.  And her first action was to track down Chakotay and offer him command of Voyager once again, feeling his involvement in the mission to be Paramount to it’s success.

When Chakotay explained about his resignation from Starfleet, Eden shocked Chakotay when she informed him that his resignation had not been accepted by Starfleet, and that they had decided to put Chakotay on extended leave instead.

Chakotay then accepted the position of Voyager’s Captain once again.

By 2401, Chakotay had reached the rank of admiral. And He was one of a few Starfleet officers that asked the Federation Council to reconsider their decision not to get involved in the Klingon-Gorn War.

However, the Federation Council maintained it’s decision and as a result, Gorn Space was occupied by the Klingon Empire.

Admiral Chakotay continues in his service to Starfleet as the current head of Starfleet Intelligence…

(Paramount) Admiral Janeway – Star Trek: Nemesis
09 – Kathryn Janeway

After Voyagers early return to the Alpha Quadrant Starfleet had a problem.

The citizen of the federation had become polarized by Voyager and it’s Trek through the Delta Quadrant, but a review of Captain Janeway’s command decisions had revealed a bunch of violations that simply could not be overlooked. And so Starfleet offered Janeway a decision, either she could accept the Admiralty, having a desk job for her foreseeable future, or she could be court-martialed for those dubious command decisions and take her chances.

At the time of Voyagers return Janeway was tired.  7 years in the Delta Quadrant had taken its toll on the captain, but she still was Kathryn Janeway, and so she made Starfleet a counter offer. She would accept the Admiralty, and play the role of an honoured Starfleet Hero if Starfleet would offer amnesty to her entire crew from any prosecution, and offer all the Maquis Crew Members aboard Voyager a full commission in Starfleet.

She would also strongly urge that if Starfleet went ahead with the refit of Voyager that Commander Chakotay be instated as it’s captain, for as she put it, it would be good PR on Starfleet’s part. Starfleet’s Command Council agreed to the terms and Janeway became a Starfleet Admiral, a position that Starfleet felt would keep the former Captain bottled and under control, of course, this was not the case at all.

Shortly after Voyager’s return, Admiral Janeway was instrumental in defeating a crippling Borg plague that swept Earth. and as a result, the Federation Council would demand she be promoted to Vice Admiral and put in charge of Starfleet Operations.  Feel the pressure from the Council, Starfleet agreed.

In 2379, she ordered Captain Jean-Luc Picard to Romulus to meet the new praetor Shinzon in hopes of opening diplomatic relations with the Star Empire, and after that mission, as the U.S.S. Enterprise E was receiving its repairs, she offered William T Riker, a man she admired greatly, command of the newly Commissioned U.S.S. Titan to spearhead further negotiations with the Romulan Empire.

Admiral Janeway would also push Starfleet Command and the Federation Council to explore the Delta Quadrant.  Using Voyagers original route home as a starting point to explore outward from and establish meaningful contact with the races Voyager had encountered during its initial trip through that quadrant. Eventually, Starfleet approved her plan, Operation Full Circle, which included her original command the U.S.S. Voyager, to lead the operation.

Kathryn Janeway continues her service to Starfleet, heading up various missions and projects for the betterment of the Federation and it’s citizens.  Still continuing to keep a watchful eye over her old crew, helping them in any way she can.

10 – Overview

Voyager’s return was heralded as a major event and turning point for the federation.  The technology and information they were able to provide Starfleet was invaluable and eventually would lead directly to Starfleet’s breakthrough in to transwarp velocities.

Eventually, the U.S.S. Voyager would be decommissioned and refurbished back to her original 2371 look and technology to be included in the Starfleet Museum, where it continues to inspire Generations of Starfleet Officers to boldly go, where no one has gone before…
