Truth OR Myth – Star Trek Discovery, Easter Egg Hunt! (Part 2)

Hello and welcome to Truth OR Myth. In today’s episode (Part 2) were taking a look Star Trek Easter Eggs in the second half of season 1 of Star Trek Discovery in honour of its season 3 renewal. I hope you enjoy.

Every subsequent series after Star Trek: The Original Series had them. Those little nods to the series that had come before them. Those are called Easter Eggs, and Star Trek: Discovery is no stranger to them.

Episode 9 has a nice little added touch to it, in this Episode Lorca is told he will be receiving the Legion of Honor award for saving the Planet Pahvo and destroying the Sarcophagusship. Longtime fans will remember that Dr Leonard McCoy from TOS and Lieutenant Commander Data from TNG have both received this award.

Episode 10 Gives another, THE MIRROR UNIVERSE, enough said!

In this episode, Burnham asks Tyler how he is by using a Vulcan Proverb, “Isik for your thoughts?” An Isik is actually currency of the Vlugtan as mentioned in Deep Space 9’s episode “Rivals”.

(CBS) U.S.S. Defiant NCC 1764 as seen in DSC – “Despite Yourself” – 1×10

Star Trek fans should be familiar with the name U.S.S. Defiant. Not only is it Siskos heavily Armed Starship in the 24th century but it is also the other Constitution Class Starship stuck in interphase Space in the TOS Episode The Tholian Web.

Episode 10 also gives us a funny moment Easter Eggs, when Lorca shows off his Scottish Accent, an accent that is very similar to that of Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott from Star Trek: The Original Series.

The agonizer booths re-appear once again in this episode. First seen in the TOS episode “Mirror, Mirror”, they would pop up again as an invention of Dr Phlox and Lieutenant Reed of the Mirror universe in the Star Trek: Enterprise Episode “In a Mirror Darkly Part 1”.

Episode 11 we get the Vulcan Beard back, First seen in the TOS Episode “Mirror, Mirror”, it has come to denote alternate universes throughout Television and pop culture.

The Andorians and Tellarites also make a reappearance in the Star Trek Franchise here. Fans will note they first appeared in the TOS episode “Journey to Babel” and then later throughout all series receiving minor cosmetic changes all the while becoming fan favourite species.

(CBS) Tellerite and Andorian as seen in DSC – “Wolf Inside” – 1×11

Episode 13 has Lorca explaining how he ended up crossing the dimensional plane to end up in the Star Trek Prime Universe. Apparently, a transporter malfunction occurred while he was in an Ion Storm. Kirk and his landing Party also ended up crossing the dimensional barrier while transporter during, you guessed it, an ion storm, again see the TOS episode “Mirror, Mirror”.

One of the most mentioned, destroyed or damaged ships in the Star Trek universe has to be the U.S.S. Saratoga and Star Trek: Discovery didn’t miss its opportunity to drop that ships name. First mentioned in “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” and then in Deep Space 9, this time the Saratoga was destroyed by the Klingons.

Another freeze frame moment for fans is when in episode 14 the Map of Qu’Nos pops up. If you look closely, you’ll see many locations that have been mentioned before throughout Star Trek’s History. Some of these include; Kang’s Summit from DS9, The Caves of Kahless, Star Trek: Voyager and the Caves of No’Mat, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

(CBS) The Discovery jumps into a cave on Qo’nos – DSC – “Will You Take My Hand?” 1×15

You’d be blind if you didn’t catch this one, but of course in the spirit of being thorough ill mention it anyhow. Admiral Cornwell, while explaining Discovery’s upcoming mission, explains that the U.S.S. Discovery will be the first Federation ship to visit the Klingon Home World since Captain Archer and the Crew of the NX-01 visited it almost 100 years earlier.

The Orions make an appearance in episode 15. though seen throughout the franchise’s history this race made its first appearance in the Original Serie Pilot “The Cage”, when Vena transforms herself into one in an attempt to seduce Captain Christopher Pike of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Some more name dropping, this time we Betazoids and Mintaka 3. The former being the mind reading empathetic species That Counselor Troi’s Mother is of in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the latter being the Planet that the Enterprise Visited in the Next Generation episode “Who Watches the Watchers”.

Yum Yum, anyone hungry? We head on down to the Star Trek food court and get yourself some Ceti Alpha 5 Eels from “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”.

We’ve got Nausicans as a name drop as well, you’ll remember these guys first appearing in “Star Trek: The Next Generation’s” episode “Tapestry” and are the ones that are responsible for Picard losing his heart.

(CBS) The U.S.S. Enterprise 1701 as seen in DSC

And finally, I think the BIGGEST most important Easter Egg of the Entire season comes at the end of episode 15. That is, of course, the reveal of The U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. She’s a beauty…
