WDIM? – Easter Eggs And References In “First, First Contact”

Hey welcome to WDIM?, today, I will be breaking down the final chapter of the second season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, an episode titled “First, First Contact”.

After watching this finale, I truly feel like Lower Decks is my favourite of all the Star Trek series currently being produced. This show seems to continually build on its foundation with each episode by raising the stakes of the plotlines and also deepening the relationships of its characters.  While the Lower Decks crew and the entire crew of the Cerritos for that matter are supposed to be relegated to menial tasks that no other ship wants, each episode brings them into the larger scope of the franchise, with them taking on missions that are paramount to the security of the federation.

You can see the evolution very easily just by looking at how last season ended compared to this one, with the seemingly more important ship the USS Titan coming to the rescue of the Cerritos in the season one finale.

However, in the final episode of the second season, we see that now the Cerritos is the ship coming to the rescue of another vessel.  There are a lot of great character moments, as well as some big hints about the future of the show and tons of references that I will go over here.

The title of this episode, “First, First Contact” is a reference to the first, first contact mission with an alien race that has been assigned to Captain Freeman, who is voiced by Dawn Lewis.  We have seen throughout Lower Decks that the Cerritos is usually relegated to Second Contact missions and in fact, the pilot episode of Lower Decks is named Second Contact and deals with the crew visiting the Galardonians, and the second season premiere episode titled “Strange Energies” deals with the Cerritos making the second contact with the Apergosians.

(Paramount+) The Obena Class, USS Archimedes

The episode begins with the Cerritos meeting up with a ship named the USS Archimedes.  Archimedes was a Greek mathematician and inventor and is considered by some to be the greatest mathematician that ever lived.  This is not the first Federation ship to carry the name, as in the series Discovery it is revealed that the prime universe version of Philippa Georgiou served on a ship named the Archimedes when she discovered Saru.

This ship may look a lot like the Excelsior Class ship, seen Captained by Hikaru Sulu but this version of the Archimedes is an Obena Class, which is a new class of ship created for the series, similar to the California class of ships that the Cerritos is.  Series creator Mike McMahon revealed that the class is named for Lower Decks Art Director Nollan Obena.
