ViscomCBS & Netflix Part Ways, Season 4 Delayed Globally

ViacomCBS & Netflix Part Ways, Season 4 Delayed Globally (UPDATED)

Today ViacomCBS and Netflix officially parted company with ViacomCBS buying out the lucrative deal they struck less than 4 years ago with the streaming giant.

For the last 4 years, Star Trek: Discovery has aired in 190 countries globally and has been the home for all things Star Trek for as long as we can remember, unfortunately, today that all changed.

As of midnight, tonight Discovery will exit Netflix and will instead be launched globally with Paramount+ in 2022.

Official Statement

“As we rapidly expand our global streaming footprint, we are bringing more of our top titles home to ViacomCBS for Paramount+ markets around the world,” ViacomCBS Networks International streaming boss Kelly Day told Deadline today.

“We have a strong global and local content pipeline that positions us for success across our regions, and repatriating beloved series like Star Trek: Discovery for Paramount+ is another step forward as we bring fans more must-watch series worldwide.”

Not By Choice

It has come to light that the choice for Discovery to leave Netflix was not one of their doing, in a now-deleted tweet, the official account for Netflix Uk & Ireland made it clear that this was done without them wanting it…

Whether their comment of “We don’t make it so it’s not up to us unfortunately” meant it was not Netflix’s choice or merely the person using their account is unknown.

Canada Not Affected

Although the deal will remain with Paramount+’ Canadian partner and Discovery will stay on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel and streams on Crave under the long-standing deal with the broadcaster, the rest of the world will have to wait for the new series to drop on Paramount+.

Picard & Lower Decks

In the linked Deadline article, it is made clear that Picard and Lower Decks are to remain on Amazon Prime, however, what it does not state is where the new seasons will air be it on Amazon or Paramount+ when they are released.
