WDIM - Strange Energies

WDIM? – Star Trek Lower Decks : Season 2, Episode 1

Hey Everyone and Welcome Back to What Did I Miss, where today I will be covering all the easter eggs, references and things that you may have missed in the first episode of the second season of Star Trek Lower Decks, named Strange Energies.   If this is your first time on the channel, my name is Eric and here I talk about Star Trek and all the sci-fi stories and characters I love, so be sure to hit that subscribe button and the bell so you don’t miss any videos. I also have a contest going for subscribers, so if you are interested in that stick around until the end for the details.

The episode title is a reference to the sci-fi McGuffin mechanism that Star Trek and other science fiction stories use to move along a plot by using a concept that is never fully explained.  In the episode Commander Ransom receives god-like powers similar to the character Gary Mitchell, who I will go into further a bit later, after coming into contact with what is referred to as Strange Energies.  In fact, if you look at the Memory Alpha entry for Gary Mitchell, you will actually see the term Strange Energies used when describing the characters backstory.

The episode begins with Mariner seemingly being held by the Cardassians, a race that was introduced in Star Trek the Next Generation but featured more heavily in the series Deep Space Nine, and on Voyager within the character Seska and the Maquis storyline.

Outside the facility we see a few Cardassians war ships, which are designed to resemble the Cardassians signal.

Once we see Mariner, it looks as though she is in a room similar to the interrogation room used by Gul Madred and Captain Jean Luc Picard in the later half of the two part Next Generation episode Chain of Command, one of the highlights of the show’s sixth season.  When the Cardassian interrogator is not aware that the captain is Mariners mother, it is a pretty big hint that this is in fact a simulation since Cardassians were known above all else for the ability to gather intelligence.
