Truth OR Myth – My Top 10 Worst Star Trek Episodes

Well, here we are, my top 10 worst Star Trek Episodes list…

Hello and welcome to Truth OR Myth, in today’s episode we’re counting down my top 10 Worst Star Trek Episodes. If you haven’t seen a particular Trek series please note, there could be spoilers! And lastly, this is an opinion piece, meaning it’s not factual but personal… So it’s not about what the entire fanbase thinks or what you might think are the worst episodes, it’s about what episodes I dislike and think are the worst… So with all that out of the way, let’s begin…

(CBS)

10 – TOS – “And The Children Shall Lead…

Most people would agree that the 3rd Season of Star Trek: The Original Series was filled with more bad episodes then good, and nothing symbolizes the bad more for me then this episode, “And the Children Shall Lead.” A Group of Children take over the Enterprise and its Crews mind with odd, almost inappropriate, gestures and plays on all their fears with cartoons and horrible makeup effects it’s no wonder this episode gets a huge thumbs down for me…

(CBS)

09 – TNG – “Shades of Gray

A lot of series often do clip shows, seems it was a popular thing to do from the ’70s to the ’90s, and these clip shows would be a hit or miss affair with the audiences. Star Trek: The Next Generation’s episode, “Shades of Gray,” was certainly a miss for me. Not really adding to the series at all, or getting the audience up to speed as to what had happened over the previous 2 years, it was clear this episode was just thrown together to round out the season during the writers strikes…

(CBS)

08 – ENT- “North Star

Smack dab in the middle of the do or die season 3 of Star Trek: Enterprise, “North Star,” hit a sour note with me the moment I began watching it. It was a stand-alone episode that would have fallen much better in season 1 or 2 of the series, this episode saw the intrepid crew of the NX-01 play cowboys all the while the Xindi were closer and closer to finishing the weapon that would see Earth’s Destruction… It just really didn’t fit with that storyline at all, and in fact, felt as though they simply had to quickly add an episode so the season…

(CBS)

07- VOY – “11:59

Who doesn’t love witnessing our favourite characters travel through time and engage in an exciting adventure? Apparently not the writer of this episode. In Star Trek: Voyager’s episode “11:59,” we get one of Janeway’s ancestors falling in love in a story so boring I thought it should be on the CW… It’s great to have stories about ancestors, but only when they’re relevant. Here it all just felt forced and was completely unnecessary and given Voyagers already wasted potential in a LOT of regards this episode signifies for me exactly what happens when writers are afraid to step outside the box…

(CBS)

06 – DS9 – “Move Along Home

Alamarain, you count to four… I think that’s the worst part of this episode simply cause that crazy song gets stuck in your head. Star Trek: Deep Space 9’s season 1 episode, “Move Along Home,” is simply silly with a twist ending that you can see coming from a mile away… Also, I get races would develop along certain lines and have different values then humanity, but what the heck, I don’t buy for a second that a space-faring race would explore the galaxy simply to play video games… Like, come on…

(CBS)

05 – TNG – “Code Of Honor

Star Trek has always stood for forward-thinking, diversity, equality and inclusion, except in this episode… Star Trek: The Next Generation’s episode, “Code Of Honor,” simply takes all Star Trek greatest qualities and throws them out the window… Filled with 80’s Racism and Womanizing the only thing that surprises me about this episode is that Gene Roddenberry had agreed to make it… Just watch it again with an unbiased eye and you’ll see how cringe-worthy it is…

(CBS)

04- TAS- “The Practical Joker

There are some that can’t stand Star Trek: The Animated Series, but I’m not one of them. I actually think it’s great for what it was an can see why it won awards during its 1973-74 run… But every time I see the Episode, “The Practical Joker,” I’m constantly having to remind myself of this… The real joke? That this episode was made…

(CBS)

03- VOY- “Threshold

This episode being in this list shouldn’t surprise anyone. Star Trek: Voyager’s episode, “Threshold,” was a mess with a story that really made no sense… So bad and So detested is this episode by the fan community that a large chunk of it refuse to even consider this episode canon… Of course, canon doesn’t work that way, once it’s on-screen that’s it, it’s canon but for me, I can’t blame them. It also seemed to tie future series hands when it comes to infinite warp, something I really can’t believe was allowed to happen…

(CBS)

02- ENT- “These Are The Voyages

Described by the showrunners of Star Trek: Enterprise as a Valentine to the fans, this episode titled, “These Are The Voyages,” ended up being a slap in the face to the fan community, cementing Berman forever as the man that ruined Star Trek. Even though I’m not a Berman hater, this episode is very hard for me to watch. using a TNG season 7 episode called, The Pegasus,” as a tie in, this episode is just a mess. I completely agree that using this as Enterprises Series Finale as well as the last episode of Star Trek’s First Golden Age showed just how out of touch with the Trek Fan Base and burnt out Berman had become… It was very disgraceful…

And now it’s time for some dishonourable mentions…

ENT – “Unexpected”
TOS – “The Lights Of Zetar”, “The Cloud Minders”
TNG – “Birth-Right (Part 1)”, “Sub Rosa”
DS9 – “Explorers”, “Field Of Fire”
VOY – “Non-Sequitur”, “The Fight”

(CBS)

01- VOY- “Tuvix

It may surprise some of you out there that this episode of Star Trek: Voyager titled, “Tuvix,” is worse for me than the episode “Threshold,” but it is… And the reason? Well, it simply signifies for me what exactly was wrong with Voyager. having Janeway become a murderer as opposed to having Tuvix himself be self-sacrificing tarnished Janeway’s character in a completely unnecessary way that she could never recover from. It took everything from Star Trek that we had learned about respect for sentient life, and how Starfleet deals with such and threw it out the window in favour of a mediocre story. I never liked Tuvix as a character, but he didn’t deserve to be murdered by the Series Lead, it was a sad story that should never have been made as it was…
