Truth OR Myth – Starfleet Starships – The Sovereign Class

Hello and Welcome to a SPECIAL episode of Truth OR Myth. When strolling down memory lane I took a look at some of my previous Starship videos, and I found them to be lacking. Though they contained extensive information about the Exterior Factors of these ships, they didn’t contain the interior Factors that I came to include in ALL my Starship Videos. So I made the decision to update these videos and will pepper those updated videos here and there in the foreseeable future…

By 2364 Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets was in the pinnacle of its golden age of Starship design having commissioned and constructed the large and powerful Galaxy-class starship. An exploration and scientific vessel, the Galaxy Class was designed for comfort and scientific study, and ultimately, that was its problem…

Today’s video is my first and on my favourite Starship Class, the Sovereign Class. So sit back, relax and enjoy all the canon information you can handle on this amazingly wonderful class of Starfleet Starships…

(Paramount) The Enterprise E – “Star Trek: First Contact”

In 2365, when the omnipotent being known as Q, flung the Enterprise D Hurtling through space to meet a race named the Borg, Starfleet Command’s ego was suddenly deflated when they began to realize that the ships that had built during this Era were simply not up to the task of fighting this new and dangerous foe.

That fact was re-enforced when a year later another encounter with the Borg had decimated the fleet they sent to combat it, and almost resulted in the assimilation of Earth itself.

There’s nothing that sparks innovations and development of technology as much as imminent threats, so Starfleet began looking at the prospect of creating new, easily built, powerful starships designed for one thing and one thing alone, to defeat the Borg.

As a result, Starfleet began to develop many new classes of starships such as the Defiant Class, The Akira Class and the Intrepid Class. These classes though powerful in their own rights, were smaller compared to the classes such as the Galaxy and Nebula Classes. So what would happen if Starfleet designed a new battleship? A large immensely powerful one with one mission alone, to engage and defeat the Borg…

(Paramount) The Enterprise-E At Warp “Star Trek: Nemesis”

And so the Sovereign Class was born. AT length of Approximately 685 Meters, she was to become the strongest, most advanced starship designed up to this point. Even the impressive new Intrepid Class Science/ Tactical ships with its bio-neural circuitry, could not compare to the strength this vessel possessed.

This vessel was designed quickly but took advantage of all new technological breakthroughs that had come to pass since the Borg incident at Wolf 359.

Originally having an unprecedented 12 phaser arrays, 1 Forwards Quantum And Photon Torpedoes launchers and 3 Aft Photon Launchers, this was quickly refitted to a staggering 16 Phaser arrays, 1 Forward Quantum Launcher, 3 forward Photon launchers and 6 aft launchers.

The ship itself was 24 decks tall, though variations and inclusions of the new Jefferies Repair and Maintenance Tubes made it so that the ship could be refit to have 29 Decks. In terms of deck layout, the upper sections of the Sovereign-class starship formed the command section and living areas, while the lower decks housed main engineering and fuel supplies.

Like the Intrepid Class, the Sovereign Class utilized Bio-Neural Circuitry which, even for her large size, made her a very manoeuvrable class of starship.

In terms of Speed, The Sovereign Class had a standard cruising speed of Warp 8 and though currently classified is believed to be able to reach a maximum speed of 9.985, which meant she could be called in case of an emergency and arrive quickly.

(Paramount) The Enterprise-E’s Captain’s Yacht was the Cousteau – “Star Trek: Insurrection”

Like most Starfleet Starships of the time, the ship itself also contained what was known as the Captains Yacht. A Personal Vessel for Captains uses that could be detached from the underside of the Saucer Sections hull… The name of The Enterprise-E’s Captain’s Yacht was the Cousteau…

It is unknown exactly how many sovereign Class Starships were or have been constructed. However after the destruction of The Enterprise -D saving the Veridan Star System, Captain Jean-Luc Picard was given command of the Newly commissioned Sovereign Class USS Enterprise -E and sent on a year-long shakedown cruise to prepare the ship for active duty.

Although this vessel was designed a to be a battleship powerhouse, it should be noted that she, in fact, included the most advanced scientific systems and laboratories which allowed her to be one of the most multi-functional Starship designs ever created.

The Bridge was located on Deck 1, with a standard console configuration. these consoles could also easily be converted to other consoles in the event of damage to any specific station on the bridge.

Connected to the main bridge was also the Captains Ready room and Observation Lounge. Which like preceding classes such as the Galaxy Class would ensure the Captain did not have to be very far from the Bridge in case of an emergency.

Crew Quarters were slightly smaller for the most part then their Galaxy Class counterpart but were just as comfortable. Starfleet realized that this class would not have to sacrifice comfort in favour of advanced and powerful ships systems such as the Defiant Class. With Starfleet ultimately deciding to exclude civilians from serving and living on this class, the space saved from these types of quarters and support facilities allowed this ship class to be one of the most comfortable yet powerful vessel class Starfleet had to offer.

Stellar Cartography was located on Deck 11. This scientific lab could be used by Star Chart Mapping teams or a ship’s Captain to view specific areas of space when required.

(Paramount) The Enterprise-E – Main Engineering – “Star Trek: First Contact”

Main Engineering was located on Deck 16 and was a multi-level complex. One of the Largest Warp Cores every cerated was located in the centre of the room. And access points to Jefferies Tubes were located all through out the Engineering Facility.

The Sovereign Class Transporter systems were also the most advanced in the fleet, and in normal operation could even transport a small vessel while that vessel was in flight.

For the crew’s enjoyment, facilities such as Holodecks, gymnasiums and a ship’s library were available.

The Main Sickbay was located on deck 7 and was a large space that could deal with many more medical injuries than any class before. A second much smaller facility was also located on deck 16. This smaller sickbay was the standard type that would be included in other class such as the Intrepid class.

Also included in the Sovereign Class was new EMH Medical system. A Holographic Doctor could be called into existence to help in any medical emergency or even assume the Chief Medical Officer Role if the doctors on board the ship were injured or dead…

The Main Shuttlebay located on Deck 9 was also a vastly larger space than in any previous Starfleet Design. This would allow the Sovereign Class to accommodate both runabouts and several shuttlecrafts at once on the deck.

An Additional Shuttlebay was located in the engineering hull and was equally as capable of handling shuttlecraft operations.

In the event that the ship had to evacuate, the Sovereign Class carried a large number of escape pods. these pods could easily be detached from the ship and contained heat shields for planetary landings if a class M planet was nearby.

Even though it’s original purpose was to fight the Borg, by 2373, Starfleet had lost confidence in her Captain, Jean-Luc Picard, to be able to handle another encounter with the Borg. As such, the Enterprise was ordered to patrol the Neutral Zone, In case the Romulans were going to attempt to take advantage of the situation. Instead of leading the fleet when the Borg were on approach to Earth to assimilate the Federation once again.

(Paramount) The Enterprise at the battle of sector 001 – “Star Trek: First Contact”

And while listening to the battle with the Borg, even though the fleet assembled seemed to be holding up to the Borg attacks much better than at Wolf 359, Captain Picard made the decision to disobey Starfleet orders and head into the battle anyhow. A decision which ultimately leads the Enterprise to defeat the cube and the Borg’s plans once again.

Then in 2379, after Shinzon of Remus, seized power and took over the Romulan Empire. The USS Enterprise is involved in a great space battle that would have if failed ultimately lead to the destruction of Earth.

In this Battle we get to finally see the Enterprise E and the Sovereign Class in all her glory doing was she was designed to do, fight. Against a ship boasting 52 Pulse Disrupter Canons, 27 Photon Torpedo launchers, Primary and Secondary Shielding and an advanced Cloaking System which allowed her to fire while cloaked, the Enterprise held her ground, eventually winning the fight, saving Earth, Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets.

Though heavily damaged, she was then towed back to Spacedock and repaired so she could continue to boldly go where no one had gone before…
