RJC – Star Trek Retrospective – Star Trek Insurrection

After the hit Star Trek: First Contact, the Star Trek franchise was riding high as Deep Space Nine and Voyager both continued their successful TV runs concurrent to the movies.

Following in the footsteps of the TOS movies, Paramount decided the next Star Trek movie should be a more lighthearted adventure.

The resulting movie, penned by Michael Piller and once again directed by Jonathan Frakes proved to be a controversial entry in the film series: Star Trek Insurrection

Synopsis

The Battle For Paradise Has Begun

As the Dominion War ravages the Alpha Quadrant, an idyllic planet in the middle of an unstable region within Federation space serves as home to the peaceful Ba’ku – and a veritable fountain of youth. When the Son’a and the war-torn Federation plan to exploit the planet in order to rejuvenate themselves, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Starship Enterprise must rebel against the orders of the Federation Council in order to save the Ba’ku and expose the atrocities that are about to take place.

Insurrection has a lot of hidden secrets that not many people know, here are a few examples…

Script Rewrites

Patrick Stewart was given the title of associate producer for Insurrection. When given the second draft of the feature film, Stewart did not like how it felt, He felt this draft was just a longer television episode, something many fans feel about this film anyway. one of his main critiques was It didn’t quite have the scope and feel of a movie. after giving his feedback, Pillar completely rewrote the script into what we see on screen today…

Tested Poorly

Many audiences found the scope of Insurrection lacking. one main thing missing was the lack of any space battles and shockingly Paramount felt the same way. A revised ending was filmed involving a last-minute rescue which involved the Enterprise E doing battle with the So’Na and the rescue of Picard off the Injector.

Quark & Rom

there is a cut scene floating around the web of DS9′ resident bar owner in the Baku village. his idea was to set up “timeshares” on the planet as a holiday destination. like other footage shot but not used, it ended up on the cutting room floor.

Casting Choices

With the role eventually going to F. Murray Abraham, some major Hollywood names were in the mix and even offered the role of Ru’afo, the biggest one was the Terminator actor himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. thankfully he declined the role.

Other casting choices for Admiral Dougherty were also considered with Wilford Brimley, Gene Hackman and Brian Blessed. the role eventually went to Anthony Zerbe.

Many Titles

When writing a feature film its title is one of the main draws and Insurrection had many “working Titles and a few to choose interesting ones to choose from.

Some of the titles that were considered were, Where Time Stands Still, Forever, Beyond Paradise, Pathfinder, Millennium, Past and Future, Transcendence, and Rebellion. Also on the slate: Prime Directive, The Directive, The Resignation, The Enemy Within, Breach of Promise, Dereliction of Duty, and Apostasy.

In a later interview, out of all the ones listed and mulled over, Pillar said his favourite had been Star Trek: Sacred Honor.
