The Measure of an Episode – Picard 201 “The Star Gazer”

Nothing delights these podcasters more than a diversion into modern Star Trek. Of course, we normally indulge only in the classic Star Trek of a bygone era. But we’ve decided the cornerstone of good health is a diversified diet, even the diet of streaming television. So, we’ve diverged and expanded our indulgence into Star Trek: Picard and are excited to announce a second podcast, offering our two and a half cents on what our favorite synthetic nonagenarian has been up to. Apparently, he’s been up to quite a bit.

Synopsis of Picard 201 “Stargazer”:

Season premiere. Starfleet must once again call on legendary Jean-Luc Picard after members of his former crew – Cristóbal Rios, Seven of Nine, Raffi Musiker, and Dr. Agnes Jurati – discover an anomaly in space that threatens the galaxy.

It can’t be ignored this episode leans heavily onto the what-have-they-been-up-to scenes. Almost every scene introduces our main characters who will monologue about the past year and a half since the Romulans tried to kill everyone. It’s not the worst episode ever for a series premiere, but it was fairly dry.

(Paramount+) I need, Tea Earl, Grey Piping HOT!

Picard visits Guinan who was a pleasure to see again. She might be these podcasters’ favourite character. There was a disappointing aspect to Guinan which was that she didn’t feel like the Guinan from the show.

Guinan is not the jolly, bear-your-teeth smiling, gregarious person as she’s depicted in this episode of Picard. She’s reserved, stoic, wise, and perhaps a bit tortured from the horrors she’s experienced in her long years. There’s a likelihood Whoopi didn’t do much homework in revisiting her portrayal on The Next Generation, playing Guinan more as Whoopi and less as Guinan. We’re hopeful she makes another appearance on the show.

The show’s momentum intensifies tremendously when a new flavour of Borg assimilate an entire Starfleet armada, prompting Picard to self-destruct the Stargazer. Then Q makes an appearance, who apparently did do his homework, and is still every bit as entertaining as he was thirty years ago. It made these podcasters excited for what’s to come on the show, ever so more than the first season.
