The Measure of an Episode – Strange New Worlds S1E6 “Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach”

These podcasters were infatuated with Pike’s hypnotic hair, but it’s come to that point in the run of the show where it deserves to be revisited. It’s getting a tad out of control. In the pilot of Strange New Worlds, the Captain’s coif exuded the elegance, charm, and confidence of a top-shelf men’s hair dye one might encounter at Whole Foods.

But it appears Mount and his hair handlers have perhaps become too cocksure in the styling of the Captain’s hair, seeing that it is now a requirement he ducks when crossing the threshold of a door.

Synopsis Of “Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach”

A threat to an idyllic planet reunites Captain Pike with the lost love of his life. To protect her and a scientific holy child from a conspiracy, Pike offers his help and is forced to face unresolved feelings of his past.

This episode featured one of the more interesting, and maybe somewhat inconsistent characters: the “chosen one’s” father whose name escapes these podcasters. His introduction in the show made him out to be a cold, unfatherly person seemingly concerned only with the health and safety of the “chosen one”, and not his child.

Later, his condescending attitude toward Enterprise’s crew becomes apparent when referring to the sickbay as a blood-letting chamber or some odd thing. His demeanour flips yet again to sympathetic when he informs the doctor that his daughter could be cured in a lab on the surface of the planet.

He’s then revealed as the evil saboteur only to be redeemed when we learn his child is to be tortured and effectively killed in the ceremony on the surface.

It’s this ilk of character that these podcasters enjoy seeing in their Star Trek: multi-dimensional, unapparent, and yet surprising. This episode also embodied good Star Trek hygiene with its moral dilemma: there isn’t an obvious side with which to agree. In fact, neither side is entirely righteous nor are they entirely impeachable. The episode leaves the audience with a dilemma to ponder by delivering stimulating discourse.

Yet again, these podcasters were impressed with this episode and certainly recommend any and all episodes of Strange New Worlds.
