WDIM? – Star Trek: Discovery – “…But to Connect” – Breakdown

Hey everyone and welcome to What Did I Miss, today I will be breaking down the seventh episode of the fourth season of Star Trek: Discovery, “…But to Connect”.

This episode did not have the fast-paced action that we have been used to so far this season, but rather it was a chance for the season to deflate a bit like the crew of the Discovery is put in the middle of two very large decisions.

One is how to deal with the still-developing Artificial Intelligence on the ship named Zora, which is now disobeying orders, and also how to handle the Dark Matter Anomaly (DMA) and the alien species behind it.

With this episode being the last of the season before a hiatus, you had to have a feeling that it would also end on a classic Star Trek cliff-hanger and this episode did not disappoint.

This first reference is for you diehard Trek geeks out there, that understand the importance of the number 47 to the history of the franchise.  The number 47 has often been used across most of the different series and can be traced back to Star Trek writer Joe Menosky and a club he was part of as a student at Pomona College in California.

The 47 Society claims that there exists mathematical proof that all numbers are equal to 47, and that this number occurs with greater frequency than any other number.

Starting with the series the Next Generation you can see the number used a lot, and Discovery is no different.  This being the fourth season as well as the seventh episode, the writers pay homage to this tradition by listing the runtime of the episode at almost exactly 47 minutes.

The episode begins with Stamets and Adira analysing the DMA data with Zora looking for a source.  Eventually, Zora determines the coordinates, but she refuses to give them to the crew, including Captain Burnham even after being given a direct order.

It is worth mentioning that at this point, Zora is not a recognized member of Starfleet, up until and including this point, similar to Booker’s position on the ship, she would not be subject to the captain’s direct orders under the threat of Court Martial, which foreshadows the development made at the end of this episode.
