As we head to the back end of the third season of Star Trek: Discovery, and with episode 9 we have the first of a two-part story that promises to deliver an answer to what has been wrong with Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh).
In “Terra Firma Part 1” the crew of the Discovery venture to a planet on the far reaches of the Federation in search of a way to help Georgiou, whose rapidly declining medical status has her facing certain death.
Meanwhile, back on Discovery, Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio) make a breakthrough that offers surprising news on the origins of the The Burn.
In a surprising turn of events in this episode, we are treated to the FIRST ever TV reference to the Kelvin Timeline a timeline that was the main feature of the films made by JJ Abrams. The reference is to Nero’s mining ship from Star Trek ’09, the Narada, the ship that caused the divergence from what we know as the establish “Prime Universe” and resulted in a drastically altered timeline.
During a sickbay scene with Dr Culber (Wilson Cruz) and Kovich discuss Georgiou’s deteriorating condition, to enable Kovich to explain exactly what is wrong with Georgiou, he shows Culber a virtual rendering of Yor, a Time Soldier who travelled forward in time to 2379. however, what makes Yor unique is that he also travelled across from an alternate dimension spawned by Nero’s Romulan mining vessel’s time incursion.
in this rendering, you can see Yor wearing an early Star Trek: The Next Generation-era Starfleet uniform giving us a first a nice throwback to an era gone by and to what might be a look into the uniforms worn by the Kelvin Starfleet in the late 2370s.
