Watch The Trailer!

Season 2 of Picard is going to throw him all over Star Trek’s realities and timelines… it is sure going to be one hell of a ride!

Now! Read on for our analysis! of everything we caught in the trailer and perhaps some bits you missed!

Time Warp

In these images, we see La Sirena apparently executing a time warp near a star (presumably Earth’s sun).

This seems to be a direct reference to the similar ‘slingshot’ method of time warping used notably in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and TOS: “Tomorrow Is Yesterday”

Classic Ships Revisited

We here at Treksphere love the various ships of Star Trek, and the new trailer gave us plenty to drool over!

Most of the shots of La Sirena show the freighter without its Eddie Van Halen-inspired paint job, instead sporting an overall grey paint scheme.  This could be due to the time manipulation centre of this season’s plot.  I for one doubt Cris Rios would purposely get rid of such a distinct colour pattern for his beloved ship.

Moving into a few space battle scenes, we see three Starfleet ships engaging La Sirena in Earth orbit.  Two of these ships are clearly Nova-class like the USS Equinox from the Voyager episode of the same name, the other is a Steamrunner-class. They look a bit beefier than the Equinox, with what looks like ablative armour plating.

The third, visible more clearly in this shot of all three in flight, is a Steamrunner-class ship as seen in Star Trek: First Contact and numerous Deep Space Nine episodes.  The Steamrunner has a very distinct profile, but many of us mistook it for a Luna-class like the USS Titan at first.

Closer inspection reveals the truth, and it’s delightful to see such a relatively-obscure ship show up in a modern show.

The shifting timeline has caused numerous changes to things we know and love.  Of note is the changed painting in Picard’s study.  Originally a lovely painting of the Enterprise-D (similar to the one in his ready room, if not the same), adorning the mantle is a depiction of a Galaxy-class variant clearly geared for war instead of peace.

This design was done by Sean Tourangeau, a very talented artist who most famously designed the Luna-class starship in a winning entry to a contest from Pocket Books in 2008.  His creation was beautifully rendered in animation (and canonized!) in Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Ship Interiors

Much like all-new Star Trek shows we love to see new or updated starship interiors and the new trailer doesn’t let us down.

We were also treated to a few interior shots of an apparent Starfleet ship in battle.

These sets, although only briefly seen in the trailer, look outstanding!  A great update of classic Starfleet architecture for the post-Nemesis era.

Also if you look closely you can see what appears to be a Voyager style uniform!

Classic Characters and Classic Actors

Moving on to characters, the new trailer gives most of the returning cast some time in the sun but also gives us plenty to see from some returning characters and actors.

Here, we see the good admiral with the omnipotent Q, likely at Chateau Picard.

Earlier this week Paramount+ released an image of Picard in his study with Laris, wearing what has been confirmed by showrunner Terry Matalas as a new Starfleet uniform with a new badge.

(Paramount+) Take the blue pill! John de Lance Picard Season 2
(Paramount+) Take the blue pill!

The style is intended to echo the “monster maroon” uniforms worn in the TOS films, and it appears that Q is mimicking the attire of Picard, as he did many times on TNG.

Also in the trailer, we can see several Vulcans or Romulans in apparent hiding on Earth.  One looks to be attempting a mind-meld with a young human is this a possible young Jean Luc Picard!!.

Brent Spiner is returning this season, but not as Altan Inigo Soong.  He plays a new character, likely living in Los Angeles in 2024.  In the trailer, we see this new character interacting with Q, specifically receiving a blue vial of some kind.

Q is not the only legacy character confirmed to return this season. Joining La Sirena and her crew for at least part of the season’s adventure, Annie Wersching will be playing the Borg Queen.

Annie Wersching replaces Alice Krige who famously played the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact and the final episode of Voyager.  She looks absolutely incredible and sounds just as hauntingly beautiful as the original interpretation of the character.

The Borg Queen and Q are not the only legacy characters making an appearance this season…

(Paramount+) Whoopi Goldberg returns as Guinan! Picard Season 2

An Old Friend Returns

As most of us knew, shortly after Picard season 1 premiered, Sir Patrick Stewart appeared on The View and personally offered the incomparable Whoopi Goldberg the opportunity to reprise her classic character Guinan, and the trailer has confirmed that she accepted!

The wise Guinan, who famously tended bar and listened aboard the Enterprise-D, makes an appearance in the trailer.

Once again tending bar and presumably listening, Picard pays her a visit to seek her perspective on the shifting timeline, as shown in TNG: ”Yesterday’s Enterprise.”

She owns a bar in the Forward Avenue Historic District of Los Angeles, a lovely callback to her time aboard the Enterprise-D serving drinks and sage advice in Ten Forward.
