Star Trek: Picard – Friends Return, Show To End With S3?

With the return of Picard just around the corner, the show’s producers and cast have been talking to various media outlets and the most recent issue of SFX magazine has a great spread all about season 2, some hints at season 3 and if the show is likely to end after its 3rd outing!

We all know that when Patrick Stewart returned to the role of Jean Luc Picard he wanted to do something totally different from what he had done before, so it comes as no surprise that we found our hero in a totally different place than we left him at the end of the last TNG movie Star Trek: Nemesis.

With the first season of Picard bringing us a totally different version of Jean Luc by the end of the season, the question everyone asked was, “Where can they go from here”

The Return Of Some Old Friends

With season 2 the show had to bring something we have not had before… With season 1 we had the return of Riker, Troi and the death of Data (again) but what could they do for season 2 that would not be “TNG Revisited”…

Both Akiva Goldsman and Terry Matalas wanted this season to be a continuation of Picard’s story, and in a way wrapping up all those unfinished moments from Picard’s past…

We looked into what remained outstanding for Jean-Luc Picard, because we’re historians… how could we not be when it comes to the character?

We discovered that looking inward and looking backward became the direction we wanted to take.

But what could have been one big event in Picard’s history that remains outstanding?…

(Paramount+) Q up to his old tricks!
(Paramount+) Q up to his old tricks!

Enter Q! the return of John de Lancie as the omnipotent Q was something the Goldsman and Matalas knew they had to do!

So from our palette, we chose colours that allowed us to do that, and so you have two things that are canonically interesting. One is Q and his ability to manoeuvre us through time and space and this very interesting relationship that he has with Picard, one that one might say has always been left unresolved.”

“He’s the first relationship on Star Trek: The Next Generation, really, that Picard had,” Matalas adds.

“It was about how you tell a story about Q that’s unexpected, and not the same Loki-esque shenanigans that we are used to.

However, it was not just simply bringing back Q they had to make his return something not only different than before but it had to pay off and further the character, Matalas adds:

You will definitely see a side of Q you’ve never seen before.

There’s some things going on with Q that are definitely surprising, considering the kind of being he is.

And how that would reflect on Jean-Luc Picard and what’s going on with his life at the moment. The first two episodes are a pretty wild ride,” he reveals.

But With the return of Q and Time Travel playing a key role within season 2, who else could they bring back to not only further Picard’s story but in a way help carry the story forward…

Who has beef with Q other than Jean Luc and more importantly who has the unique understanding of alterations in time! Guinan…

I won’t talk about [her] much, but enough to say that no one has ever been more aware of divergences in time than she has.

So as we start to talk about time and we start to talk about that which is the past, both objectively and internally, those two characters were these great gifts to us.

Is This The End

When Picard was first announced it was always going to be a limited series, however, the main focus was always if Patrick Stewart wants to do more then the show will go on…

Back in 2020, Akiva Goldsman spoke to Collider about how long the show could go on for…

“I mean, I think we have discussed it as both a 3 season show, a 5 season show, a “let’s just keep going forever” show… But we certainly… Star Trek: Picard in my view will go as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it…

And the series has been renewed for its 3rd season recently, but is it really going to end after season 3 or could it continue… Addressing this again, Akiva Goldmans had this to say…

There was always a plan for three seasons, but with “an opportunity for us to have spectacularly failed after one, and that would have been one and done.”

As for more? “God knows what the future will bring.
