Star Trek: Picard – Is Season 3 The End? & What Is Next

No matter how much we don’t want it to, one day Star Trek: Picard will end… But the question is exactly how far off is that day.

Recently thanks to some coverage of the newest issue of SFX magazine there has been some speculation as to when Picard will finally warp off into the sunset and leave our screens.

The assumption has always been that Picard will run for as long as both Paramount+ and Sir Patrick Stewart wants it to.

So how long will Picard run for? And why is there suddenly this buzz over it…

To put it simply thanks to certain “news” outlets getting things mixed up or just not fact-checking their reporting people have been ignoring what Goldsman said, instead of pointing exclusively to a remark from Sir Patrick Stewart about filming being “weeks away from wrapping the series,” as confirmation the show will end after its third season.

Possible Season 4?

To answer if the show will last longer than 3 seasons, we need to do some time travelling of our own…

So, let us travel back to when gearing up for the launch of the hit show, Patrick was asked about what comes after and would eventually get a film.

“Oh lord, we are set up for possibly three years of this show, so if there is a film, it’s a long way off.”

Then in an interview with Collider in 2020 Goldsman addressed this and said…

“I mean, I think we have discussed it as both a 3 season show, a 5 season show, a “let’s just keep going forever” show… But we certainly… Star Trek: Picard in my view will go as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it… As I’m sure you know, he was not interested in coming back.

And we did a lot of… really good collaborative story breaking and talking, and you know, and I think he’s particularly delighted in a good way about having come back. And we will rely on that goodwill until he feels he’s done.”

Again in September this year, when speaking to TrekMovie Akiva Goldsman confirmed “the plan was always three” seasons, but he also kept the door open for more.

Finally, this leads us to what Akiva Goldsman said in SFX Magazine…

“There was always a plan for three seasons, but with “an opportunity for us to have spectacularly failed after one, and that would have been one and done.”

As for more? “God knows what the future will bring.”

Picard Spinoffs?

Even if Picard was to end with its third season that does not mean it is the end for the show entirely and it certainly doesn’t mean there could not be a show with some or all of the remaining cast…

When asked if there could be spin-offs to Picard, Goldsman also saw possibilities, telling SFX:

Are there things in Picard that could be their own storytelling arc? Or their own storytelling spines? Yeah, for sure. Is that the direction of the expansion of the Star Trek Universe? That turns out to be above my pay grade.

Matalas also hinted he already has some ideas:

What more is coming in that story? It’s definitely my favorite time period. To me, Star Trek: Picard is the present day of Star Trek. And what’s going on in that particular world is very important to me. So stay tuned, that’s what I’ll say.

With all the speculation and quite frankly unsubstantiated rumours even if Star Trek: Picard is to end after its third season, both Goldsman and Terry Matalas have hinted that they have ideas for what’s next.

Nevertheless, were excited to see what the future will hold, will we have more adventures in this time period? After all, it is still an exciting and vibrant era of trek history to explore!
